Updates Week Ending 3/13/10

What is that big bright orangy-yellow thing in the sky? Oh yeah...I think they call that the sun! It looks like we just might be able to dry out this week. However this IS Texas and as we know things do change quickly.

The advanced forms class was a big hit! And for anyone who says forms don't do anything for you...tell that to my body! An hour's worth of forms is a reeeally good work out! The next class will be Friday March 19th at 7pm.

We will make a slight adjustment for April as we ran into a parking situation with the Knight's 1st Friday Fish Fry. We will move to the 2nd and 4th Friday for April (4/9 and 4/23). Remember you need to know the current class form to attend.

We're coming up on mid-March and I know Spring Break is coming. RKMSF WILL be open all month long so if you are in town...we'll have a class for you.

The attendance/promotions list has been updated thru 3/6 and is posted in the lobby. Please make sure you check your class counts and promotion status.

3/27 at 9:30a is KFSS graduation. The doors will open at 8:30 so come early! If you have just joined us please come and be a part of the picture!

3/31 at 5pm is SNAP graduation. These folks have worked really hard so come and support them!
************************************************************************************
Looking ahead for April...we are planning to make a scheduling change on Wednesday evenings. Immediately following SNAP, we will be having a basic Self Defense class from 6-7pm. This class is open to the public and will be a 4 week course 1 day a week and the cost will be $40. It will focus on awareness, grabs, holds and escapes and general precautions. So if you know someone who is interested in self defense but really isn't sure they want to commit to a full kung fu program....this is an excellent opportunity!

If you are a current KFSS student and you are just starting out...this is also a good way to pick up some additional knowledge and skills. IF you are a seasoned KFSS student and are available...we always need seasoned folks to help. We are taking reservations now so call 817.590.8585 or email me at kris@rkmartialsciences.com. Class begins April 7th.

We will hold our KFSS class from 7-8pm on Wednesdays.
*************************************************************************************
Have a great week and we'll see you in class!

We'd like to announce the we will be offering an Advanced Forms class on the 1st and 3rd Friday of the month (the first class being THIS Friday 3/5/10) at 7pm. The only pre-qualifier is that you know the current class form. This is NOT the clas to begin learning the form. The class will look deeper into the form and begin adding weapons to the forms. So if you are interested please contact us and let us know.

March 1st - Tuition is due.

March 27th is KFSS Graduation. The promotions list is posted in the lobby. We will begin at 9:30am, so please come early to get stretched out and be a part of the class picture.

Weather Updates - Friday Classes Cancelled, Late Start on Saturday

Well! While the main roads will be clearing later the residential streets may take a little longer. We are also looking at temps dropping into the 20's tonight and we know what that means....any water on the roads, bridges and underpasses will freeze. So....

We will cancel tonight's class (Friday) and Saturday's 8:30 class, and open for the 10am and 11:30 classes on Saturday.

If you have any questions please feel free to email me at kris@rkmartialsciences.com or call 817.590.8585.

Be Safe and enjoy the snow! Its not everyday Texas sees 12 inches of snow!!!!

Weather Update-Thursday 2/11 Classes Cancelled

So unless you've been under a rock all morning you know its been snowing since early this morning. It is supposed to keep snowing until late this evening and the temperature is going to stay right around freezing and then drop below freezing this afternoon. The roads are going to get pretty dangerous so discretion being the better part of valor....we're going to cancel all classes today.

We'll play tomorrow by ear.

Stay Safe!

Updates Week Ending 2/6/10

2010 is rocking right along. January flew by and we're heading into mid February. KFSS graduation is getting close (March 27th) and I will have the tentative promotions schedule up in lobby this weekend.

Our SNAP graduation will be March 31st.

Weather Alert!!! By now most of you have heard that the DFW area is in for some wintry weather long about Thursday. We all know this can change in a heartbeat, but the weather folks seem pretty sure we're going to see some white stuff....when and how much is still an unknown. I will try to get an email out early, but if you don't see anything by 4pm, please check the website before coming to class.

Be safe out there!

See you in class!

Updates Week Ending 2/6/10

We're almost through the first week of February! KFSS Graduation isn't far off, so please be sure you're getting you're classes in now!

There will be an instructor's meeting THIS Friday (2/5) at 7pm at the school. All instructor's and ID's are encouraged to attend. If you haven't had an opportunity to learn the new form, this is a good time to learn.

The weather has cold and rainy and it's hard to get motivated sometimes to come to class. Remember, when you move around during Kung Fu, your body is creating the endorphins to feel so much better during the dark rainy months. So if you're feeling a little down and lethargic...come to class!!!!=)

See you there!

Updates Week Ending 1/23/10

We're halfway through the month of January! Today is a holiday for many schools. We will be open for classes as usual.

If you're like me...January is an insanely busy month! It's important to make time to train not only your body, but your mind as well. Stress can slow the bodies ability to heal and in some cases even cause illness. Make the time to de-stress your body and your mind...come to class! Stress can also cause one to miss key indications trouble is brewing. Its important to be able to focus on your surroundings in order to be safe. This is hard to do when you're mind is focused on something else.

See you in class!

Updates Week Ending 1/9/10

It is the beginning of the new quarter. (Or rather last week was...) I think the weather kept many folks away from class, but we did have some brave souls who faced the sub-freezing temperatures to come to classes.

I'd like to encourage everyone to get your classes in early so you are not scrambling at the end of the quarter to get your classes in. KFSS Graduation will be March 27th and SNAP will be March 24th.

Its been a very cold start to winter and it will likely continue off and on for the next several months. Please make sure you keep your body flexible by warming up and stretching often.

See you in class!

Update - Weather 1/7/10

The arctic front that has been predicted all week finally arrived! (And it brought a friend....how thoughtful....NOT!) Anyone who has been watching the news knows many school districts and roadways in the area are currently closed (7:25am) due to black ice conditions and frigid temperatures that are not expected to climb above freezing today.

The ice is expected to evaporate (not melt) due to the high winds by about mid morning. IF the road conditions are clear this afternoon, we will hold classes tonight. PLEASE CHECK THE WEBSITE after lunch today and before you head to the school tonight. Any updates to the website after noon may not send an email update until late tonite or in the morning. If you have any questions, please call 817-590-8585.

Tuesday Classes Cancelled (12/29)

After speaking with Master Robert, we both agree we would rather ere on the side of caution. The snow is beginning to accumulate on the grass and roof tops in my area and as it is not likely to stop any time soon we feel the responsible thing to do is cancel class tonight.

The temperature is supposed to hover at or just above freezing and while the roadways may remain clear, the bridges and overpasses may begin to freeze.

We wish everyone a safe and happy New Year! We'll see you in class on Saturday January 2nd.

The winter SNAP quarter begins January 6th.

Updates Week Ending 1/2/2010

Can you believe it? It's almost 2010! I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas. I know mine was. A little harrowing on Christmas Eve (I hope everyone made it to your destinations safely). The first white Christmas (that stuck) in 83 years!

Speaking of the weather, we're due to have more of the white stuff tomorrow. The schedule for the school this week is:

Monday/Tuesday 5:30 Adults and 6:30 Kids classes
Closed Wed-Fri
Resume normal schedules on Saturday January 2nd.

In the event the weather makes driving treacherous tomorrow, we will not hold classes. As Master Robert is teaching on Tuesday, I will be in communication with him to determine if class will be held. If we cancel class I will post it on the website, however the email may not go out in time...PLEASE check the website for updates. YOUR safety is our utmost concern. I was one of the many who were traveling on Christmas Eve....it took all of my San Soo training to remain relaxed!

SO....what they say is really true...if you don't like the weather in Texas...stick around...it will change!

Master Robert and I wish everyone a very HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Be Safe,
Ms. Kris

Message from Master Robert and Updates

Hi All,

I hope this finds you well.

Again this semester, we’re going to focus on basics. I’m still seeing the basics (foot work, breathing/relaxation, smoothness, targeting, transitions, excessive speed, timing, etc) missing after the first step or two. This isn’t just with the beginners; it’s across all the ranks. Without the basics, none of the techniques will work very well if at all. Without the basics, you rob yourself of balance, control, and therefore power. I’m challenging you to focus on these things when you come to class. Think about what you’re are doing, check your foot work and make adjustments if necessary. Focus on breathing…in through the nose and out through the mouth. Inhale on the transition and exhale on the strike. If you find yourself stopping in the middle of a technique, then cut your speed in half. Think about the basics while working the lesson, working out, practicing forms, practicing the blocking/punching drills and while stepping through the eight count stance and the five wheel horse. The basics are the foundation on which the rest of the art is built. Without the basics in place, the rest will fall short and eventually fail.

I’ve also been missing some of you in class! I’ve been able to attend occasionally during the week and on Saturdays and you’ve missed some pretty cool lessons and techniques. I know that Halloween is right around the corner followed quickly by Thanksgiving and then Christmas…and things are starting to get busy. But don’t let your training lapse. If you don’t use it, you’ll get rusty. Its also good exercise and with the holidays rapidly approaching, that’s a good thing! Make a commitment to come to class at least twice a week, you’ll be glad you did and so will we.

Remember too that when you come to class to ask questions. If you see something in a lesson or just in working out that you don’t understand or wasn’t explained adequately then ask. You should never leave class with an unasked and/or an unanswered question. Because we have an answer and if we don’t, we’ll research it and get an answer. This is an incredible art and the better you understand it, the better practitioner you will be.

Thank you all for being a part of our Kung Fu San Soo family. I look forward to seeing all of you over the next few weeks. Don’t forget to pay attention to what’s going on around you when you’re out and about. Be safe!

Master Robert.

Updates:

Updates Week Ending 10/10/09

Well...it might be rainy, but I am so happy to see the cooler temperatures! Fall also ushers in Flu season. I know everyone has seen all the news updates and flu season isn't to be taken lightly. Take the precautions you need to stay healthy...get plenty of rest, pay attention to your diet, wash your hands often, and if you are sick, stay home.

The winter SNAP session begins this Wednesday October 7th.

There is a sign up sheet in the lobby for people to sign up for the demonstrations at the Japanese festival on October the 24th (1pm) and 25th (2pm). If you would like to help us show others about our art, please sign up at the school or email Ms. Kris. The festival is open from 10-5 Saturday and Sunday.

November 13th and 14th we will welcome Master Ted Sias. I am including some back ground on Master Ted in this update. He would like to know what WE would like to see. He will do one session on Friday evening and we will host a reception afterwards for Master Ted and he will host another session on Saturday during our two adult classes. There will be a separate fee for these sessions...price to be determined.

Here is some information about Master Ted:

Master Ted Sias began training in the ancient art of Tsoi Li Ho Fut Hung (Kung Fu San Soo) in 1967 at the Frank Woolsey Studio in Downey, CA. He received his Black Belt in 1970 and continued training and teaching under Frank Woolsey for two more years. In 1972, Master Ted furthered his training under Grand Master Jimmy H. Woo (Chin Siu Dek) who was also Master Frank Woolsey’s instructor. That same year, he opened his first studio in Westminster, CA. Master Ted earned his Master’s Degree from Grand Master Jimmy H. Woo in 1980 and continued training under the Grand Master until his death in 1991. In 1988, Master Ted moved his own studio to Huntington Beach where he still teaches today.

In addition to Kung Fu San Soo, Master Ted teaches Hatha Yoga, True Balance, and Mind Boxing. Hatha Yoga is a system of health to improve flexibility, strength, balance, breathing, relaxation, and coordination. True Balance is a series of seven postures which produce deep personal energy and proper skeletal alignment. Mind Boxing is a system which focuses on uniting the mind and body through movement and postures to eliminate physical tension and produce effortless power. These systems complement the art of Kung Fu San Soo.

Mater Ted also recognizes the unique self-defense needs and abilities of women. He teaches women special skills to stop an attacker, inflict injury, and escape quickly. Through focused training and discussion, women put themselves into dangerous situations and study appropriate responses to these situations rather than fearful reactions. They learn to recognize aggressive male behavior and strategies to neutralize potential attackers. This approach to training inspires awareness and confidence in female students.

Even today, more than forty years after beginning his Kung Fu San Soo training, Master Ted still exemplifies the focus and determination required to master this “life changing art.” His personal approach to teaching, generosity as a teacher, and openness to evolving the art have gathered a loyal following of long term students and earned great respect within the elite Kung Fu San Soo community. His students build personal confidence through years of studying the principles and application of the art, a confidence that can influence their entire lives. Above all, Master Ted embodies the strongest traits of a Kung Fu San Soo fighter: humility and respect.

Master Ted is excited to share his knowledge and experience. Please join him at the RK Martial Sciences studio on Friday, November 13 and Saturday November 14. The classes will be tailored to fit your collective preferences and will be published before his visit. Please respond with suggestions and questions soon.

Submit you suggestions and questions to Ms. Kris as soon as possible.

Everyone have a great week!

See you in class!
Ms. Kris

Here are a few updates everyone needs to be aware of:

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY! Friday night classes have been suspended until further notice. Mr. Jamie's hours have changed at work (and as we all know...keeping a roof over our heads is very important). We will let you know if there are any changes that will allow these classes to continue.

We have been invited to participate in the Ft. Worth Botanic Gardens Japanese Festival on October 24 and 25th. This is a great way to get our school in front of folks in the Tarrant County area. Updates Week Ending 7/25/09

It's been very quiet this month at RKMSF. Summer has diverted many of our students to other activities, vacations, and work events. So I would like to remind everyone of a couple of items:

1. It takes a minimum of 3 children for a kids class and a minimum of two adults for an adult class (plus the instructor) to have a productive class. If we do not have enough students, the students who DO show up will get class credit, however class will not be held.

2. Be on time. If students arrive more than 15 minutes past the start of class and there were not enough students to make the class at the start of class (normally 35 minutes past the hour), class could not be held and that person will not get credit for the class.

3. Do not leave valuables in plain sight in the dressing rooms (i.e. phones, keys, purses, etc...)If you are going to leave valuables in the dressing rooms, please bring a lock so you can lock them in the lockers. Locks are to be removed when you leave for the day. DO NOT LEAVE ITEMS LOCKED IN LOCKERS AT THE SCHOOL OVERNIGHT! Otherwise leave your valuables at home or locked in a safe place (not in plain sight) in your car. RKMSF is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

We have made arrangements (finally) to get RKMSF logos embroidered on uniforms. If you are interested in getting this done please contact Ms. Kris. Remember - white belts do not get embroidery or patches until they reach yellow belt.

Tentative promotion lists will be posted by the 15th of August. If you are moving from white to yellow belt, please make sure your belt fees are paid. See Ms. Kris for details.

Summer graduation is September 25th so make sure you get your classes in early!

I hope everyone is having a great summer!
See you in class!

If you are interested in going up to Plano to watch this, please email me and let me know.

Updates Week Ending 7/4/09

Today is the beginning of the Summer quarter! Thank you to all who came to graduation on Saturday. We had a very small crowd but there were some really good demonstrations.

We have some scheduling changes you need to be aware of:

SNAP - There will be no SNAP classes during the month of July as many of the students have scheduling conflicts for this month. SNAP classes will resume on Wednesday August 5th.

Wednesday Adult Advanced classes will be held at their normal times.

July 4th Weekend - RKMSF will be CLOSED on Friday July 3rd in observance of the holiday. We WILL be OPEN on Saturday July 4th and running a normal schedule.

Tuition is due Wednesday July 1st.

We will be starting a new form this Saturday! Focus for this quarter is going to shift back to basics. Breathing, footwork, targeting and smoothness. These are the very foundations for which everything we do is built upon. So look for exercises that focus on stance work, targeting and smoothness over the next several months.

Have a great week! See you in class!

Updates Week Ending 6/20/09

OK...who turned up the heat?! Whew! It may not officially be summer in Texas until the 21st, but it sure feels like it. And since it is so warm and humid, we are allowing what we affectionately refer to as "summer" uniforms. All students are welcome to wear a T-Shirt (Preferably a KFSS T-Shirt -no tank tops please) and their gi pants with their belt. It does help to keep you cooler, but watch out for the rug burns! Of course you are welcome to continue to wear your gi if you wish to.

There is an update attendance and promotions list in the lobby. If you moving from white to yellow OR brown to black belt, your belt fees are due by June 23rd. If you are receiving a black belt degree, your fee is also due by the 23rd.

Please check the list to verify attendance and promotions!

Kids Movie Night on Friday was cancelled due to weather and low attendance. We will reschedule closer to the end of the summer when our kids return from vacations.

The Thursday night and Friday night 5:30 combined Adult/Kid Class is going well. This is basically two classes in one. Kids work with Kids and Adults with Adults. So if you are an adult without a kid, you are welcome and if you are a kid without an adult, you are welcome too! We already have two parents who have signed up and are learning along with their kids!

There will be NO SNAP class this Wednesday! Advanced Adult Classes at 6 and 7 are still scheduled.

We have several instructor's who are taking some vacation time, so you may see Master Robert show up as a substitute!

SNAP Graduation is Wednesday June 24th at 5pm.

KFSS Graduation is Saturday June 27th. Please come and support your fellow students. Doors will open at 8:30, Graduation will start at 9:30.

Its going to be a HOT week. Remember to drink plenty of liquids during your work outs. Everyone have a great week!

Update - H1N1 (Swine flu) Virus

The H1N1 Virus (swine flu) has many people being very cautious with regards to their exposure to others. At RKMSF we will continue our normal operations taking care to provide a safe and clean facility to our students. Hand sanitizer is provided and antibacterial soaps are in the restrooms.

I am including a link to the CDC website (http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/). The CDC recommends that if you are feeling any FLU symptoms (including fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting) that you see your doctor and then stay home from work and other activities until you are symptom free.

It stands to reason that since this flu (as with other flu viruses) makes people feel so rotten, the last thing they want to do is work out. So if you are sick...stay home...get well and we'll see you when you're feeling better!

Stay Well!

Message from Master Robert

Hi All,

I hope this finds you well.

Something occurred to me recently while in class and I thought I would pass it along. When was the last time you approached the blocking drills with the attitude you were going to glean something new or different from them? When was the last time you approached a lesson with the idea you were going to take something extra from it? When was the last time you approached an open work out as a learning opportunity? The reason I ask is that there is always something to be gained from these and any drill or exercise we do.

Here’s what I’m asking you to do…for the next three months when you come to class, pay particular attention to a drill, exercise and/or lesson and find something extra in it. Then use that something extra in every class you attend. It will probably be a little something that makes the drill or workout just a little bit better. The more experience you have, the more detailed you can be with your examinations. Pay attention to angles (of approach, entry and strikes), targets, reactions, follow ups, intent, foot work, timing, etc. There are so many layers to what we do that it would take more years than we have to examine it all. If you do this for three months, you’ll experience an incredible growth of knowledge and skill…and you just might develop a very good habit!

I thank you all for being in our Kung Fu family. See you in class!
Master Robert.

Message from Master Robert

Hi All,

I was home last week and was able to visit several of the kids and adult classes…lots of good stuff going on. I know we all have favorite instructors, but once in a while go to a class you don’t normally attend. You might be surprised at what you’ll learn. We are learning the greatest of the arts and we have the best instructors you’ll find anywhere. Take advantage of the collective knowledge we have at our disposal. Learn from each instructor; learn from each other and you’ll find a flood of knowledge and experience on which to draw. Think about it.

I was asked a couple of weeks ago how to deal with fear, the “deer in the headlights” response to a sudden aggression or attack. What would you do? I would breathe. Think about it. When we’re startled or scared, we inhale sharply (translates to a shallow, high inhale) and then we’re motionless, tension throughout our bodies. When that happens we’re not in control, fear is in control. Fear is an irrational emotion; if it’s in control then our response will be irrational and therefore ineffective. Nothing works until we breathe. Breathing allows us to think, to move, to relax, to counter attack…to be in control. Now that we’re in control, we can competently react to the threat and eliminate it by whatever means necessary. Breathing is critical to overcoming fear (we can’t eliminate it, but we can overcome it) as it is with so many other things we do. As in making the decision to survive, you also need to make a decision to breathe no matter what. You need to decide that you won’t freeze up; instead, you’ll breathe, relax, move and eliminate the threat…something to think about and to work on. Let me or your instructor know if you have any questions.

See you in class!
Master Robert.

Wednesday 2/11/09 - Master Robert is in town this week and will be teaching the Wednesday Advanced Adult classes. This is a good opportunity if you are a senior belt and unable to attend on Saturday mornings to work with Master Robert. Class times are 6p and 7p.

Something to think about.....

With the weather in constant flux during this time of year...illness has a tendency to run rampant...especially when the body is already run down. Remember to take care of your body! It is your tool! Stress from work and our daily lives can weaken the immune system and something as simple as a cold can turn into something really nasty in a hurry. As always...listen to your doctor...do everything medically necessary to stay healthy, but also listen to your body....if you are always tense or stressed...there are simple breathing and meditative exercises that can help reduce stress and help to strengthen the body. Sound crazy? Try it! I guarantee you will see an improvement in your physical well being not to mention your focus and concentration while training.

If you need help with relaxation techniques...talk to your instructors...they have exercises that can help.

See you in class!

Weather Updates - Wednesday 1/28/09

Isn't the weather in Texas fun?!

Ok...while the surface streets may be fairly clear, the other instructors who have been out driving and fighting the traffic and I agree...having class this evening is just not a prudent thing to do as any moisture will most likely start to re-freeze once the sun goes down.

So...all Classes for this evening have been cancelled. SNAP and Advanced Adults. We appreciate your understanding.

Everyone stay warm and stay safe. Remember the first rule of Kung Fu....PAY ATTENTION!

Normal class schedules will resume on Thursday 1/29.

Updates Week Ending 1/31/09

It was great to see the turnout for classes this weekend! We even had some student family members come to our first Friends and Family class. We hope to continue having this type of class at least twice a quarter. So mark your calendars for the next Friends and Family class on March 7th. Adults 10am and kids 11:30am.

Weather update: Apparently there is a significant weather event including sleet and freezing rain due to hit the DFW area late tonight and early tomorrow. As this IS Texas its hard to tell what the impact will be until it actually happens. As of right now, NO classes have been cancelled, but that could change by tomorrow. PLEASE check the website for closing information or call 817-590-8585 to get the latest information.

February 21st - Master Darian's 2nd Weapons Seminar "Short Sticks" - class is $25 and stick set is $20. The sign up sheet is in the lobby. Class will be from 8:30-10:30 with and adult class immediately following, kids class at normal time.

Its not too early to start thinking about graduation....which will be March 25th for SNAP and March 28th for KFSS...get your classes in early!

Everyone have a great week and we'll see you in class!

Updates Week Ending 1/17/09

I hope everyone is having a great week! I'm a little late getting things out this week, but wanted to let you know about a few things that are happening.

Saturday 1/24 - Friends and Family Classes - We would like to encourge our current students to bring a friend or family member to either the 10 am (for adults and Kids 14 and older) and 11:30 for kids. This is a great way to introduce Kung Fu San Soo to someone who might be interested in learning. We will teach them how to fall, block a punch and throw a punch. If your friend or family member joins and stays for 3 months, you will recieve a free month tuition!

Saturday 2/21 - 8:30-10:30 the 2nd in Master Darian's weapon seminar series...Short Sticks. The class is $25 and the bamboo stick set is $20. The sign up sheet is on the board in the lobby. If you wish to purchase a set of sticks...I need your order by 2/12.

Wednesday Advanced Adult Classes: Attendance in the Advanced Adult classes on Wednesday has been at zero for the last 4 weeks or so. Mike is doing some contract work at night so we will have guest instructor's for the next 6-8 weeks. IF attendance doesn't pick up in those time slots, we may consider putting those classes on hiatus. We need to get some feedback in this area so please contact me or Master Robert at the school number.

One last thing...I have not had the opportunity to post the payments to the computer at the school....please ignore any prompt that says...PAST DUE!!!!

I will be traveling this weekend so I will see everyone next week!

Weather Update-Monday Classes Cancelled

While the freezing rain is supposed to stop around noon and turn to just rain...the other instructor who has the later classes this evening and I agree...we prefer to err on the side of caution as the bridges and overpasses become treacherous after the sun goes down this evening.

We will cancel classes for this evening and begin again tomorrow.

Go figure...80 dgrees on Saturday and 30's on Monday. What a difference a day makes!

Be safe this evening!

Message from Master Robert

Thinking about workouts, practice and experimentation…..

Our workouts are probably the best teachers we have. The instructor gives us a lesson or two and we practice it. Once we’ve ‘mastered’ it, we start mixing it up with other lessons we’ve received. That’s where experimenting comes in…if something comes to mind that seems like it should work, give it a try. It may work beautifully (smooth, efficient, effective) or it may not. If not, spend a few minutes dissecting it to see why not. Maybe an adjustment in targeting, foot position or body reaction needs to be made or maybe it just doesn’t work, or at least work efficiently. That’s okay.

Workouts are the time to find out if something isn’t working because there you have the opportunity to fix it or discard it.
* Experiment with non standard blocks as you may not always be able to execute a perfect text book blocking drill block. As long as the block keeps you from getting hit and sets up and is part of the counter attack, you’ll be okay.
* Get in front of the mirror and allow yourself to be put in a leverage or restraint, then use the mirror to see what you can do to counter it. Keep in mind the counter is most likely the opposite of what you think you should do.
Be creative…use your hands, your legs, you body position, your balance, your BRAIN and don’t forget to relax.
* Oh…and don’t forget CONTROL, either. All of this skill, power, balance, focus and relaxation amounts to chaos without control. Be conscious of you speed and your contact with your partner(s). Be conscious of you your intensity as well as your intent. Control is as much about mental discipline as it is physical regulation. Mental/emotional control is very much a part of maintaining physical control.

Whenever great skill (all of the above) is applied, there must also be great control. KFSS isn’t just about winning the fight and being ‘safe’, it’s also about self respect and respect for others.

Master Robert.

Updates for Week Ending 10/25/08

I hope everyone had a great weekend! The weather was gorgeous!

One thing I've noticed since the beginning of October is the decline in attendance at the 4:30 classes. This happens pretty much every year as kids receive more homework and school activities begin to ramp up going into the holidays and yes even those pesky germs get pasted around and kids start to get sick. This shift in attendance tends to be very seasonal and we generally start to see it pick back up at the beginning of the year. What I would like to remind everyone is that we've always kept this class going and our instructor's are there regardless whether we have kids show up or not as they generally teach the 5:30 class as well. Life can get really hectic. I'd like to encourage you to make the time to have your child in class. Their safety is our utmost concern especially going into Halloween.

Moving on...we need helpers in our SNAP class on Wednesdays. This class has once again exploded in attendance we need to make sure we have enough folks on hand to help with this very important class. If you are a current adult student and are available from 5-6pm on Wednesday night, please contact myself or Master Lisa to let us know you can help.

October 25th 8:30 am-10:30am - Master Darian's Staff Class. If you have ordered at staff, it will be at the school the morning of the class. Enrollment is officially closed at this time due to class size. Class will be held at the school so come early as there will be no official stretching and warming up.

November 8th 1-2:30pm will be our next Black Belt Class...All Black Belts are invited to attend.

November 27th - Closed for Thanksgiving Holiday.

November 29th - 1 Adult class (8:30-9:45am) and 1 Kids class (10:00-11:00am). PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE IN TIME FOR THE KIDS CLASS!

Everyone have a great week and we'll see you in class!

Message from Master Robert

Hi all,

I trust you are well.

Some thoughts on ground techniques...think about the hierarchy of the six steps on the dry erase board in the training room. The steps are: relaxation, smoothness, power, control, polish/style and intent. We’ve recently discussed intent via visualization. We’ve recently talked about polish/style, control, power and smoothness. But we always talk about relaxation and breathing. Why...because, it’s the foundation of what we do. If you don’t breath, you can’t relax…besides, it isn’t healthy. If you don’t relax, you won’t perform at your full potential and in some cases, you’ll even fail at KFSS or any other combat art. When you are relaxed, you are less likely to be distracted which means you can PAY ATTENTION to what’s going on around you. Without breathing and relaxation, we’re mediocre at best.

Relax (verb):
1. to make less tense, rigid, or firm; make lax:
5. to release or bring relief from the effects of tension, anxiety, etc.:
(From http://dictionary.reference.com)

Relaxation is a key concept to what we do. As you are going through the drills, exercises, lessons and workouts associated with ground techniques (or any other technique in KFSS for that matter) be conscious of relaxation. If you feel tension setting in, pause and relax. If you tense up, it makes it much easier for the grappler to hang on; if you relax, it makes it much easier to defeat the restraint/hold. Our default posture is tension and rigidity, especially when we feel disadvantaged or threatened. We need to change that default posture to relaxed and compliant (no tension). That means we have to practice relaxation. By the way, being able to relax is as much mental conditioning (visualization helps here) as it is physical conditioning. We have to breathe deeply, stretch, think positive, avoid worry, etc. and we have to practice these things daily, not just during our weekly or bi-weekly visits to class. First, relaxation becomes a habit through practice. Then, it becomes our default posture. When relaxation becomes our default, just about everything will become easier and more efficient…think about it.

See you in class!
Master Robert

IKE Update

At 5:45 am, Hurrican IKE is NOT expected to impact the DFW area until 2 pm this afternoon. So morning classes for today will NOT be cancelled due to weather. Sp the school will be open and classes will proceed. The black belt class scheduled for 1pm is still on. If the weather begins to deteriorate we will update the website again or call the school number at 817-590-8585.

The weather event expected in our area is expected to be worse to the EAST of the metroplex, be that doesn't mean we should not be prepared for some severe weather in our area. So if you have plans out doors...keep an eye to the sky.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Galveston and Houston areas.

As of this moment we have NOT cancelled Saturday classes, but if the weather deteriorates on Saturday as anticipated, we may very well cancel all Saturday classes.

Please check the website Saturday morning BEFORE heading out to class. Any post I make that morning may NOT be received in your email before you leave so log on to www.rkmartialsciences.com to check for closures.

Your safety is our biggest concern. So be safe!
